Report: Liverpool's revenge falls flat as 'spectacular' player decides he's not going anywhere this summer

Liverpool’s transfer business is far from finished and there could be some big signings still yet to come.

The Reds have had a clear strategy all summer long and if a player has been identified as a target, they have often ended up arriving at the club.

They have also been rather shrewd with their sales too and made good money that can be reinvested, with the biggest sale so far being that of Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich for £65.5m.

A replacement for Diaz could also be in the works, with Real Madrid’s Rodrygo a name that never seems to go away, with many believing that the Brazilian would be very open to an exit this summer.

Now, the player himself appears to have made his decision, and it will not be the one that Liverpool fans were hoping for.

Real Madrid have handed Reds supporters a lot of pain over recent years, with the Spanish giants beating them in two Champions League finals and, most recently, signing scouser Trent Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer.

Now, with Rodrygo, Liverpool saw this as an opportunity for ‘revenge’, although that appears to have fallen flat on its face, for this summer at least.

According to Diario AS, the Brazilian has decided that he wants to stay at Madrid, with his intention being to fight for his place in the side.

The report states that he believes he can win his new manager Xabi Alonso over after a disappointing Club World Cup campaign, and that he is ‘recharged’ after his holiday.

They conclude by saying that any club that has shown interest is yet to put in a significant offer, another reason why he has decided to stay.

Of course, Madrid could have a very different view if a big offer does arrive, with around £78m the amount that would force them to at least consider letting him go.

Getting ‘revenge’ is all well and good, but only if that player will add significant value to the squad, and for £78m, he does not really seem worth it.

This is not due to his quality because he clearly has that in abundance, but the options Liverpool already have at their disposal mean that there is not really a big drop-off in quality, if any at all.

Cody Gakpo will make the left wing position his own, while the likes of Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, and even 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha can be deployed there in times of need.

With that said, the Reds should now be able to use the £65.5m they got for Diaz and spend it elsewhere, with this likely going towards the deal for Alexander Isak or maybe even for a new centre-back.
