Marc Guehi is still Liverpool’s top target at centre-back but the lack of progress means others could capitalise.

The Reds have had a problem in defence throughout the summer, with their pre-season friendlies highlighting just how much of an issue they really have.

These problems persisted in their opening game of the new season against Bournemouth too, leaving fans even more desperate for another addition at the back.

Crystal Palace captain Guehi seems to be the obvious choice to go for, with the Englishman keen on the move and the club wanting to sell due to him having just one year left on his current deal.

Liverpool and Man City have been rivals at the top of the Premier League for many years now, with Pep Guardiola handing Reds fans so much heartbreak in recent history.

If it was not for him and his dominant team, Liverpool would have won many more trophies and been considered as one of the best teams English football has seen, but he made sure that was not possible.

And now, he might be set to hand the Reds even more anguish as according to the Daily Star, Man City are now interested in bringing Guehi to the Etihad.

This depends on outgoings, though, with the Cityzens only expected to make a move if both Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake leave within the next week.

The report states that Akanji is wanted by Galatasaray while Ake is on the radar of Everton, both moves that could be done by January 1st.

And, with Man City losing 2-0 at home to Spurs on Saturday, defensive reinforcements might be wanted by the Spanish manager to avoid something like this from happening again.

Just like Liverpool, they see Guehi as having long-term value and at just 25, he could be a mainstay for many years to come, hence why so many teams are interested.

There have always been question marks over whether Liverpool wait for Guehi and sign him next summer, but that runs the risk of missing out on him.

But now this could be the case this year if they are not careful.

Waiting until the last minute could see a team like Man City come in with a late swoop, with the Englishman then perhaps changing his mind and the Reds missing out.

With that said, Liverpool need to get this deal done sooner rather than later as they still need a defender, and with Guehi available at a cut price, it feels like a no-brainer.

If he does not move this summer, the likes of Inter Milan will be sniffing around next year for Guehi, again another chance for the Reds to miss out on a player who could be their starting defender for years to come.
