Liverpool may be fresh off the back of winning the Premier League, but their future is even more exciting.

The Reds have been known for quite a few years now to be one of the best in the business during the transfer market, and Michael Edwards has been key in gaining them this reputation.

The 45-year-old originally joined Liverpool in 2011 as Head of Analytics, but was promoted to sporting director in 2016.

However, as a firm believer in change being good, Edwards departed the club in 2022 in a decision that shook those at Anfield and left fans very worried.

But, in 2024 he made a shock return as the CEO of football, with Richard Hughes working under him and dealing with all of Liverpool’s transfer negotiations.

The reason why he returned was never clear, but now it is understandable why as owners FSG are implementing a plan that could help the Reds dominate for years to come.

Nowadays, many owners have numerous teams under a multi-club model, with Manchester City the best example of this.

FSG and Liverpool are now looking to do similar, with Spanish club Getafe a team they are looking to buy according to The Telegraph and make Liverpool’s sister club.

This is also a key reason why Edwards decided to come back, with the newspaper claiming that it is something that he was keen to oversee and that he wants to expand his responsibilities beyond Anfield.

Owning a sister club will enable Liverpool to develop younger talent and even any new signings not quite ready for the Premier League just yet.

It is certainly a smart, but controversial, business decision, although as it is something Edwards has been desperate for, it suggests it will prove beneficial for the club in the long term.

It is fair to say that if you think of a big signing Liverpool have made fairly recently that has gone on to succeed, it is likely Edwards brought them to the club.

Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Alisson and Andy Robertson are just a few of the biggest names he has signed for the club, indicating just how good he was at his job.

Now overseeing the whole operation and helping Hughes out, it is clear he has passed on all he knows based on Liverpool’s transfer activity so far this summer.

Edwards also aided the sales of Philippe Coutinho, Christian Benteke and Dominic Solanke, highlighting how the Reds might get some good fees for a few stars they sell this summer.
