Report: Sporting director spotted watching 'fantastic' Liverpool player ahead of likely summer exit

After making a number of high profile additions this summer, Liverpool are set to turn their attention to recouping some money.

The Reds have spent big so far, with the record-breaking addition of Florian Wirtz setting them back more than £100m.

Jeremie Frimpong has also signed and Milos Kerkez is set to join Liverpool next week, taking spending to almost £200m.

There remains the possibility of Liverpool signing a high profile number nine this summer, while a centre-back is on the agenda, too.

Bringing a new defender in has become more urgent after negotiations to sell Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen took a step forward this week.

And with Quansah currently away with England U21s, it looks like the Liverpool academy graduate’s exit is close to being finalised.

While most of his teammates have been relaxing and enjoying their holidays, Quansah, along with Harvey Elliott and Tyler Morton, have been trying to win the UEFA U21 Euros with England.

On Saturday, the Three Lions took a step closer to doing that as they beat Spain 3-1 in the quarter-finals.

With Quansah, Elliott and Morton all starting, the XI had a distinctly Liverpool flavour to it.

Quansah and Elliott even linked up to score.

The Liverpool centre-back strode forward into midfield before unleashing a long-range shot with goalkeeper Alejandro Iturbe parried straight to Elliott, who slotted home.

And according to German outlet Kicker, Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes was there to witness it all.

They claim Rolfes was spotted eating a half-time sandwich during the match in Slovakia, which he attended in order to finalise Quansah’s move to Germany.

An agreement had already reportedly been reached with the player himself, and Kicker claim that a transfer fee of more than £26m has also now been arranged with Liverpool.

It is said to be unlikely that Quansah completes a medical and finalises his move before England play their semi-final against the Netherlands on Wednesday.

However, the transfer is reportedly all but done.

Given Liverpool will only have three senior centre-back options once Quansah leaves, signing a new defender should have just become of primary importance to Arne Slot.

Liverpool are being linked with Marc Guehi, but it seems a move for the Crystal Palace captain is more likely to be related to Ibrahima Konate’s future.

As a result, Liverpool are still looking for a young centre-back who can fill the void left by Quansah.

There are options out there for the Reds, but the reality is that they must now move to sign one as quickly as possible.

Fans have seen the difficulty of going into a season with only three defensive options and Slot cannot allow for that to happen again.
