Liverpool have not had a nailed-on striker for a few years now and they are desperate for a new number nine.
Roberto Firmino was the last player to hold down the central role in attack on a regular basis, and even he was not a conventional striker.
The Reds have lacked an out-and-out goalscorer in this position for quite some time, although they may have got away with it more than other clubs would have due to Mohamed Salah.
The Egyptian consistently gets 20+ goals a season and has the threat of a striker from the right side of attack, although Liverpool want to vary up their approach next season.
Alexander Isak has always been the dream signing and it remains that way this summer despite already spending close to £200m
The possibility of the move seemed highly unlikely but now, a move could very much be on the cards as a sense of worry is beginning to set in at Newcastle.

As the Reds have shown this summer, if they feel a target would significantly benefit their side, then they are happy to spend big to try and get their signature.
Isak would, of course, revolutionise Liverpool’s attack and many believe him to be the final piece in Arne Slot’s puzzle.

Now, according to The Times, Newcastle are becoming increasingly concerned over the possibility of losing Isak this summer and they are expecting Liverpool to table a bid for him early next month.
The report goes on to state that although the Reds have spent close to £200m this summer and already broken the British-transfer record on Florian Wirtz, they still have the funds and are willing to break the record for the second time this summer.

Slot’s side are also wanting to test Newcastle’s resolve, suggesting that even if they do not manage to get him this summer, although they clearly think they can, then at least they know what it might take to bring him to Anfield in the near future.
Newcastle are also prepared to break their club wage record to tie him down to a new deal and fend off interest, indicating that this one could get complicated.
A fee north of £150m is what it is expected to take to prise Isak away from Tyneside, and that is without even factoring in agents’ fees and wages.
So, not only is this a huge risk financially, but Liverpool would be taking a huge gamble on a player whose injury record is far from ideal.

The Swede has missed at least nine games a season for Newcastle since he joined three seasons ago, with this also being a recurring theme at Real Sociedad and Borussia Dortmund.
Saying this, the 25-year-old has still scored 62 goals in 109 Newcastle games, showing that his record is not bad at all, although it would be much higher if he could just stay injury-free for a season.
When breaking your club-record transfer fee, you need to be sure that you will get the very most out of that player, but his injury record could be a deciding factor in whether Liverpool risk demolishing it again.
