Report: 'Unbelievable' Liverpool player now stepping up Anfield exit as La Liga move gathers pace

Darwin Nunez has once again endured a tough season at Liverpool, and this summer could see the striker leave Anfield at long last.

The Uruguay international has struggled to find his form under Arne Slot despite the new Liverpool manager aiding Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz to club-best seasons with the Premier League champions.

As a result, Nunez is expected to leave Liverpool this summer, with Nottingham Forest one of the teams interested in signing the former Benfica star as the Reds weigh up how they should go about offloading the 25-year-old attacker.

Yet it appears that Nunez already has a dream destination in mind, with the Liverpool no.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Nunez is ‘convinced’ he can return to his best form by joining Atletico Madrid and playing under Diego Simeone, with the Spanish giants having a reputation for creating world-class strikers.

This season has seen rumoured Liverpool target Julian Alvarez enjoy his best season yet in Europe having moved to Atletico from Manchester City last summer, with the La Liga side’s record of developing centre-forwards one of the best in the world.

As a result, it makes sense why Nunez is very keen on joining Atletico and working under Simeone, who could be the man to get the best out of the Uruguay international after three disappointing years at Liverpool.

Indeed, Ally McCoist lauded Nunez as ‘unbelievable’ during Liverpool’s 1-0 win against PSG earlier in the season, and if Simeone can tap into the 25-year-old striker’s quality, then there’s every chance that the South American could become a success at Atletico.

With Nunez also linked to Napoli, a number of big teams from around Europe are showing interest in the Anfield striker to suggest that Liverpool will not have a problem in selling the centre-forward in the transfer window.

Yet of all the teams so far linked with the striker, Atletico stand out as the best and the most realistic for Nunez given their ability to spend big on players, and Liverpool now need to ensure that the La Liga side make a move for their out-of-favour player.

Nunez at Atletico could be the move that’s needed to get the striker back to his best, and with how canny Liverpool can be in the boardroom with transfer negotiations, a good deal could be struck between the two clubs for the attacker this summer.
