Darwin Nunez is expected to leave Liverpool this summer, with Saudi Arabia a potential destination for the striker.

The Uruguay international has once again failed to make the grade leading the line for the Reds, with Liverpool set to sell Nunez in the transfer window as Arne Slot prepares to bring in a new striker in the off-season.

As is the case for most big-name players made available, Saudi Arabian clubs are interested in Nunez, with the 25-year-old attacker also wanted by River Plate ahead of their participation in the revamped FIFA Club World Cup this summer.

Yet noise coming from Saudi Arabia sources surrounding Nunez could hint towards a twist in this potential transfer tale.

According to Saudi Arabia publication 365Scores, sources say that Saudi Pro League teams are eyeing other attacking transfer targets aside from Nunez this summer, with the Liverpool attacker viewed by some sides as a ‘backup plan’.

With Liverpool in the market for Hugo Ekitike, getting Nunez off the books as quickly as possible and for a good price will be a priority for the Reds when it comes to player sales, of which there could be many high-profile departures in the coming weeks.

Yet Saudi Arabia’s latest stance on Nunez does complicate matters for Liverpool, who might have been thinking that they could have secured an easy payday for the former Benfica star if a top club from the Saudi Pro League came in with an offer.

Indeed, Nunez remaining in Europe now seems to be the most realistic option this summer for the South American striker, and Liverpool could be about to embark on a tedious mission to get the 25-year-old attacker off their books this summer.

Nunez still has a lot to give despite three disappointing seasons at Liverpool, with the Anfield no.

9 showing throughout this year to have the quality needed to become a superstar away from Merseyside and the Premier League.

And a move to a top European side could be on the cards for the Uruguayan, with Atletico Madrid interested in signing Nunez as Serie A champions Napoli have also been linked with the Liverpool attacker in recent weeks.

There is clearly a market for Nunez this summer, and if Liverpool can be proactive with the centre-forward, there’s every chance that the Reds can get a good deal for the striker from a big club on the continent.
