Richard Hughes has been a busy man in recent days as he tries to get the bulk of Liverpool’s transfer business done.
Hughes had a largely inactive first summer as Reds’ sporting director, but he is certainly making up for it now.
Over the past two weeks the former Portsmouth midfielder has been hard at work in an attempt to strike a deal with Bayer Leverkusen for Florian Wirtz.
Progress has been slow, but positive, and news emerged on Friday evening that Liverpool‘s third offer for Wirtz was very close to getting the job done.
The German is currently away with his national team, where he will play a third-place UEFA Nations League play-off against France on Sunday.
But as Liverpool and Leverkusen get closer and closer to an agreement, it has been revealed that a medical for Wirtz has already been scheduled.

Although Liverpool and Leverkusen have always sounded likely to come to an accord over Wirtz, this has been slow going for supporters.
Nevertheless, there were claims on Saturday morning that Wirtz would have a medical after the France game, and German outlet Kolner Stadt Anzeiger has now added a little more detail.

They claim that a medical has already been scheduled for Wirtz, which will take place next week.

Once the Germany international has, hopefully, passed the examination, he will then reportedly head off back on holiday ahead of pre-season.
With no international tournament to play, it is claimed that Wirtz will then join up with his Liverpool teammates in July, presumably on the first day of pre-season.
Part of the reason for Liverpool fans’ anxiety over this massive move taking so long is that there is a deadline of sorts coming up.
Due to the Club World Cup this summer, there has been an extra transfer window, which opened on June 1st.
This first registration period is set to end on Tuesday, although it then re-opens for the transfer window proper on June 16th.
It then runs right the way through to September 1st, meaning there is absolutely plenty of time to get the Wirtz deal concluded.
In order to make sure Arne Slot has as many new players as possible to bed in throughout the whole of pre-season, however, it is very much a case of the sooner the better with Wirtz.
Thankfully, it sounds like supporters won’t have to wait much longer now.
