Jose Mourinho will only let reported Liverpool target Lorenzo Pellegrini leave if someone pays the £25 million release clause in his Roma contract, as reported by Mundo Deportivo.

While it may a little over the top to compare Pellegrini’s situation to the one Harry Kane faces at Tottenham Hotspur, former Spurs boss Mourinho arrived at the Stadio Olimpico with major doubts hanging over the future of his new captain.

Pellegrini, an Italy international who sets the tone at the heart of Roma’s midfield with his pristine passing and all-action style, will be a free agent this time next year.

And, what’s more, Liverpool’s pursuit of a Gini Wijnaldum replacement has led Jurgen Klopp on the trail of a man who, with 11 goals and nine assists to his name last season, could ease the burden on the club’s famed front three thanks to his impressive end product from a deeper role (MD).

Liverpool – Pellegrini could ease the pressure on fabled front three

Pellegrini, should he stay, would surely be the first name on Mourinho’s team sheet, not just for his superb technical ability but also his natural-born leadership skills.

And, according to Mundo Deportivo, Pellegrini will only leave if a club is willing to trigger his £25 million release clause.

Unfortunately for Roma, that’s a fee unlikely to put off a Liverpool side that paid far more for the likes of Alisson Becker, Naby Keita and Virgil van Dijk, even if the pandemic has restricted Klopp’s spending power.

The report adds that Barcelona are also interested.

But, after being blown out of the water by Paris Saint-Germain in the battle for Wijnaldum, Mundo Deportivo reports Pellegrini’s £25 million price tag, coupled with his £75,000-a-week wage demands, may be a little too rich for Barca.
