Aston Villa are in preliminary talks to sign Liverpool playmaker Harvey Elliott before the transfer window closes, sources have told Football Insider.

The Midlands giants are exploring both permanent and loan options to bring the 22-year-old to Villa Park.

However, sources say that Liverpool would prefer to offload Elliott permanently, rather than agreeing to a loan deal.

Before any move for the England Under-21 international can be sanctioned, Villa would have to complete the sale of Emi Buendia to free up funds and space in their squad.

Last month (22 August), Football Insider revealed that RB Leipzig were close to signing Elliott and were at the final stage of talks with Liverpool.

However, with the transfer deadline fast approaching, the German side are yet to agree on a deal for the versatile attacking player, which has allowed Aston Villa to join the race for his signature.

Unai Emery’s side have had a disappointing start to their Premier League season, picking up just one point from their opening three games, and failing to score a single goal.

Meanwhile, Buendia could be reunited with Daniel Farke at Leeds United as Aston Villa have given the green light for him to leave on a permanent deal, sources have told Football Insider.

Football Insider revealed on 29 August that Villa are willing to let Buendia leave before the transfer window closes.

The 28-year-old was loaned to Bayer Leverkusen in January and is a target for Stuttgart, but Leeds could now launch a late bid for the Argentine.

Farke has long since considered a reunion with Buendia, and with Leeds “in the market” for a number 10, sources have said that the United hierarchy would be able to complete a last-ditch deal.
