Naby Keita is set to miss out on a farewell Liverpool appearance after failing to recover from injury in time for Sunday’s trip to Southampton, sources have told Football Insider. The Guinean has not featured in a Reds squad since their mid-March defeat at Real Madrid as a result of an unspecified muscle issue. In late April, Jurgen Klopp intimated that Keita might be close to a comeback, saying: “I guess Naby will train today – I didn’t get the medical report yet, but probably.”
Nor was he mentioned by Jurgen Klopp during an injury update at his Friday press conference ahead of this weekend’s game. And Football Insider understands that the 28-year-old is not expected to be part of the travelling party at St Mary’s this weekend.
The Guinea international has endured a disappointing final season in red, featuring just 13 times across all competitions due to fitness issues.
Klopp recently said of the midfielder’s time on Merseyside: “When people think about Naby, they probably think a few too many injuries in the time as well.
