Rangers have missed out on almost £15million after being knocked out of the Champions League in the play-off round by Club Brugge, sources have told Football Insider.

Rangers were beaten 9-1 on aggregate by Club Brugge over two legs, with a 6-0 defeat in Belgium on Wednesday (27 August) following their 3-1 loss at Ibrox last week.

The Scottish giants’ exit from the Champions League means they will now be playing in the Europa League alongside Old Firm rivals Celtic.

The second-tier competition is worth much less than the Champions League due to the vast difference in prize money.

Rangers banked around £17million from the Europa League last season after reaching the quarter-finals of the competition before being knocked out by Athletic Bilbao.

Qualification for the Champions League would have landed Rangers a guaranteed £16.1million entry fee, with that figure dropping to £3.7million in the Europa League.

Scotland’s Coefficient reported on Wednesday Russell Martin’s side would have banked an extra £13million from the value pillar system in the Champions League, while it’s worth just £6.9million in the Europa League.

However, Rangers have received a £3.7million payment after their crushing defeat against Club Brugge in the play-offs.

The Glasgow side would have been in line for at least a £29.1million payout from the Champions League, while they will receive £14.3million from the Europa League and their loser fee.

It means Rangers are going to be £14.8million down on what they would have earned in the Champions League this season.

Meanwhile, Celtic are set to bank around £11million less than their potential earnings from the elite European competition, having been knocked out in the play-offs by FC Kairat.

Martin is already facing sack pressure at Rangers despite only joining the club in June.

Alongside their Champions League exit, the Ibrox club have also failed to win any of their opening three Scottish Premiership games this season.
