Revealed: Rodgers closes in on Celtic exit after talks collapse

Sat 13 September 2025 7:59, UK

Brendan Rodgers is edging closer to the Celtic exit door after a dismal summer transfer window led to the collapse of contract talks, sources have told Football Insider.

Rodgers has expressed his displeasure to Celtic’s board after they failed to address his most pressing needs in the transfer market, namely the signing of a new centre-forward after Kyogo Furuhashi‘s exit.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, talks between Rodgers and the Celtic board have made very little progress, with less than 12 months to go until his deal expires.

Football Insider revealed on 5 September that Rodgers could opt to walk away from Celtic at the end of the season amid growing unrest at Parkhead, and the board’s failure to meet his demands in the market.

The unrest from Celtic’s frustrated fans is expected to continue after a stuttering start to the season on and off the pitch, and my sources have said progress on Rodgers‘ new contract has ground to a halt.

Sources have told Football Insider that with protests planned at Celtic Park by a fanbase keen to see wholesale change, Rodgers will be spared from their ire with supporters aware of his difficult position.

Celtic are still yet to truly replace Kyogo Furuhashi in their attack

Several thousand Celtic supporters are planning to boycott some Europa League home games in a very visible protest at their displeasure with the club’s direction, after dropping out of the Champions League.

Rodgers hasn’t been spared from criticism in the wake of their shock defeat by Kazakh side FC Kairat on penalties, but my sources have said that the 52-year-old will not be the focus of fans’ planned protests.

“There’s going to be a lot of uncertainty at Celtic”, I stated on the new Inside Track podcast.

“Not just on the playing side, but also on the management side with Brendan Rodgers in the final year of his contract.

“It doesn’t seem like there’s been too much progress on new [contract] talks with Rodgers either.

“Rodgers was quite public in saying that he needed funds and players brought in if Celtic were to kick on – that hasn’t really happened.

“I don’t think there’d be too many fans who would be arguing with Brendan Rodgers right now, especially in the current situation that Celtic find themselves in.”

Dark times could be on the horizon for Celtic

Rodgers may have strengthened his side with the acquisitions of Kieran Tierney, Benjamin Nygren and several other so-far impressive signings, but their failings in the striker department have been laid bare.

Football Insider revealed on 3 September that the sale of Adam Idah was a tipping point for some fans on deadline day, with the Swansea-bound striker replaced by Kelechi Iheanacho on a free transfer.

Iheanacho being Celtic’s only centre-forward addition of the window hasn’t gone down well given their need to sign a striker which has been present as far back as January, and those failings have only gained more sympathy for Rodgers’ plight.
