Newcastle co-owner Jamie Reuben and PIF board member Jacobo Solis visited Isak at his residence in what is described as a last-ditch effort to persuade the 25-year-old to drop his Liverpool ambitions and commit to staying at St James’ Park.
The meeting had the approval of Newcastle chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan, who was present at Monday night’s 3-2 win for Liverpool but did not take part in the home visit.
However, it seems that there was no breakthrough for the Magpies, with Lee Ryder of the Chronicle reporting:
“Attempts to get Isak to stay at Newcastle took place at the striker’s home yesterday, but the Sweden international is sticking to his guns and wants to leave the club.”
Howe was also quizzed on why the Newcastle chairman was in town, to which he admitted that he was not sure if it was related to the Isak situation:
“I don’t know why he’s here in the sense of if that’s the main reason,” said the Magpies boss.
“He’s here, obviously, to watch the team and support the team and show his presence, which is much-appreciated from my perspective and much-loved by everyone when he’s here and connecting with the players.”
“He’s the owner, he’s the most important person in terms of directing which decisions we make, but as I said, I’m not party to any conversations that have happened today, so I’ve got no idea what direction that’s in.”
