Until tonight, Rhian Brewster had completed more interviews than played senior minutes for Liverpool.

This was through no fault of his own, of course.

The teenage prodigy would have featured for Jurgen Klopp in the Premier League at least 12 months ago but for serious knee and ankle injuries.

Nevertheless, one of the more amusing scenes on the club’s open top bus tour of the city last May was Brewster, Champions League winners’ medal around his neck, being interrupted by a member of the backroom team and asked: “How many games have you actually played for Liverpool?” The good-natured tone of that interrogation reflected the knowledge Brewster's time is coming.

Klopp will paradoxically request patience as he guides the 19-year-old into Premier League football, while at the same time making it known he is now an integral member of the senior squad, hence his inclusion on the bench in Madrid.

That is why questions about lack of a replacement for Daniel Sturridge, who left during the summer, are swatted aside.

Brewster’s promotion is assured and the opening warm-up game of the summer was his first chance to show why Klopp believes him ready to repay this faith.
