With the futures of Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah still up in the air as their contracts near their expiration dates, the pressure is on the Reds’ sporting director to deliver this summer.

It’s interesting then that Hughes was spotted at another Premier League game on Saturday, having been pictured in the stands for Southampton’s game against Bournemouth.

Hughes of course has links to the latter, having worked for the Cherries before joining Liverpool, but his presence at St Mary’s may well point to some potential business in the summer.

The Reds have already been linked with a few of Bournemouth’s stars, not least Milos Kerkez.

According to the ECHO, the Hungarian is of interest to Liverpool as it looks to freshen things up at left-back, and he might not be the only player from Hughes’ former club to have caught his eye.

Dean Huijsen is another that has been linked with a move to Anfield recently, having also been touted last year before he completed his move to Bournemouth from Juventus.

Antoine Semenyo has been linked with a move to Anfield, having impressed for the Cherries this season, including against Liverpool earlier this month.

Suggestions in January that the Reds could use Ben Doak as part of a potential swap deal look to have been dismissed now (as per The i Paper), but the links are still there, with Jamie Carragher suggesting Liverpool should be keeping an eye on Semenyo.

Hughes could offer Liverpool an obvious advantage with all three players, but it might not just have been Bournemouth’s stars that he had his eye on yesterday.

Although Southampton has been desperately poor this season, and relegation looks inevitable, Tyler Dibling has emerged as a player that could have a bright future in the Premier League

The Daily Mail claimed last month that Liverpool could be ‘front of the queue’ for the 18-year-old, who will no doubt attract plenty of attention if, as expected, the Saints drop back down to the Championship.

It remains to be seen whether anything comes of Hughes’ trip to Southampton, although Slot has already promised that work is underway behind the scenes as Liverpool looks to do more business in the upcoming transfer window.

"Liverpool should always be competing for a league title, we should always be competing for the Champions League,” Slot told BBC Sport
