Steven Nicol believes right now there’s one ‘exceptional’ manager who could be perfect for Liverpool.

Just what is going on at Liverpool at the moment? It’s hard to really decipher. As always, the club has preferred to operate in secret.

This secrecy has led many to assume Ruben Amorim would be the favourite to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool. However, after he travelled to London yesterday to meet with West Ham United, that is now moot.

It remains to be seen what happens with Amorim now. But it’s clear things are not set in stone with Liverpool, and the Reds could explore alternative candidates.

Steve Nicol explains why Liverpool could target Roberto De Zerbi now

Out of all the other alternative candidates to Amorim, one that stands out a lot is Roberto De Zerbi. He’s done a stellar job at Brighton, even if this season hasn’t been spectacular.

As Theo Walcott has described in the past, he is an ‘exceptional’ manager, who has a very good track record.

He also plays a clear and distinct style of football and gets the best out of his players. Having that Premier League experience could be a vital trait as well.

Speaking on ESPN, former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol seems to agree with those sentiments. He named De Zerbi as the manager Liverpool should now look to target.

“That’s a tough one.” Nicol replied when asked who he would like to see at Liverpool.

“Oggie [Mark Ogden] was talking about if you are Man United, who do you get? I mean, De Zerbi plays the type of football that Liverpool players are used to, so, right now, I am kind of thinking De Zerbi, without going overboard, De Zerbi.”

Who else could Liverpool get other than De Zerbi?

A lot of names seem to be floating about at the moment, and it’s important not to get too ahead of ourselves.

Jose Mourinho’s name has been in the mix. Unai Emery could be another outstanding candidate as well.

But there are others who perhaps may not elicit the same excitement, such as Arne Slot or Thomas Frank.

Only time will tell, who Liverpool will truly want. You just have to trust the process. Michael Edwards is the man running the show, and he very rarely makes mistakes.
