'Right now': Richard Keys says Manchester United should appoint Liverpool legend as their new manager

Richard Keys has urged Manchester United to appoint Liverpool legend Xabi Alonso as their new manager after their latest Premier League defeat.

The Bayer Leverkusen head coach has been causing waves this season in the Bundesliga as Alonso has led the German side to the top of the standings without losing a single game.

As a result, Alonso is now one of the hottest managerial properties in football, with Liverpool even reportedly interested in their former midfielder, as well as Real Madrid.

And Keys has now suggested via Bein Sports that United should move for the former Spanish international, even with Alonso’s links to Liverpool in mind.

The presenter said: “Right now, Manchester United should go to Leverkusen and say to Xabi Alonso ‘we want you to come to Old Trafford, we will give you Saudi League money and we will guarantee you five years.’

“Fergie had when he first went to Manchester United.

He for me is the individual that might just be enough to get something going.”

Whilst there have been cases of managers joining a club despite strong links to their rivals, it seems pretty clear that Alonso won’t be heading to Manchester to join United anytime soon.

As well as the Red Devils being too much of a basket case, it’s obvious already that Alonso has his pick of some of Europe’s biggest jobs when he decides to leave Leverkusen.

Liverpool could be a dream move for supporters as Jurgen Klopp’s successor, yet all signs seem to point towards Alonso making the move to Madrid when Carlo Ancelotti departs.

Indeed, Alonso is on course to become one of the best managers in the next era of football, yet United won’t stand a chance in appointing the Basque coach given his legacy at Liverpool
