Fans also chanted in support of Conor Bradley and Steven Gerrard - perceived by many as subtle digs at Alexander-Arnold, with Bradley seen as a potential successor at right-back, and Gerrard a Liverpool legend who famously turned down offers from elite clubs to remain at Anfield.

"I love him as a friend, and I love him as a player, and he'll be missed as one of my best friends in the game.
That's how I feel about it and I'm not going to tell anyone else how to feel about it."
