Former West Ham United defender Rio Ferdinand has said Manchester United remain a bigger club than Liverpool "by a landslide" despite the Anfield side reaffirming their position as the most successful club in England.

The Reds moved level with their bitter North West rivals on Sunday by claiming a record-equalling 20th championship and their second Premier League title in five years.

When factoring in all major trophies both domestically and in Europe, Liverpool now have a clear lead over United.



The Old Trafford side have gone 12 years since last being crowned champions, although they could win the Europa League this season.

Ex-Leeds United man Ferdinand admits to having trouble comprehending just how far the Anfield side have progressed during the last decade.

But the former centre-back, who also had a spell at Old Trafford, is adamant his old club continue to be overwhelmingly more popular on a global scale.

"They're (Liverpool) the most successful club in the land, but they're not the biggest club," said Ferdinand.

'It's a fact.

You go anywhere in the world, there are more Man United fans than there are Liverpool fans.

There will be a swing of new fans who adopt successful teams.

"If Liverpool become that over the next 10 years then they have a chance to balance that up, in terms of the biggest club in the world right now.

But right now it's a landslide win for Man United in terms of being the biggest in the world."

Speaking on his Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel, Ferdinand accepted he has no option but to watch Liverpool return to their perch with United floundering at present.

"'It fries my head," he said.
