At just 16 years and 361 days old, the forward struck in the 10th minute of stoppage time to seal a dramatic 3-2 victory over Newcastle United at St.
James’ Park.
In doing so, Ngumoha broke the record previously held by Ben Woodburn, who scored against Leeds United in November 2016 at the age of 17 years and 45 days.
He became the club’s second-youngest appearance-maker earlier this year and set another milestone by starting in the Emirates FA Cup against Accrington Stanley – the youngest Red ever to do so in that competition.
On Monday, Ngumoha came off the bench for his Premier League debut and delivered a stunning late winner that will be remembered for years to come.
Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com post-match, he said: “I’m buzzing.
A good moment, a special feeling, I’m definitely happy.
“You just have to come on and make an impact and thank God that I did that
It was just a proud moment.
“Normally, last season especially, the Academy coaches and even the first-team coaches are always saying, ‘Make the back post, make the back post.’
“The fact that I made the back post is just crazy… when I saw it with Mo [Salah] and then Dom [Szoboszlai] putting it through his legs, I was like one-v-one and I just smashed it.
“The fans, I heard them screaming my name and that’s a sensational moment I would say.
“But you can’t get too carried away with all the noise, like I said, because at the end of the day I probably do that finish 100 times on the training ground so it’s no different with the fans [here].
“But obviously the fans backing you there, it’s just crazy.”
Rio Ngumoha only joined Liverpool last September but has already made a rapid rise through the ranks.
According to the Daily Mail, Ngumoha is still on a scholarship contract – for now, at least – but he is the key reason Liverpool have dismissed speculation about signing Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola or Real Madrid’s Rodrygo.
The Reds see Ngumoha as a central figure in their future plans.
