Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler is in the frame for a managerial role after his last job in Saudi Arabia.
The 50-year-old is a Premier League legend, scoring 128 goals for Liverpool across two spells.
He also featured for Leeds United and Manchester City among others.
Fowler began his coaching career at Muangthong United where he ended his playing career, before brief spells at Brisbane Roar and East Bengal.
He has rarely stayed in a job longer than a year as he left Brisbane due to the Covid-19 pandemic and Bengal when he managed just three wins from 20 matches.
Fowler went on a break from coaching after leaving Bengal.
He won six games and recorded two draws but he had his contract terminated.
Fowler is now eyeing a return to the dugout.
According to the Times of India, Fowler has applied to become the new manager of the Indian national team, who are currently ranked 133rd in the FIFA rankings.
“Last year there was massive interest in the job, many of them (current) national team coaches and those who had managed teams at the FIFA World Cup,” a senior official told TOI on Monday.
“This time around, there’s also interest from across the world, but not as many high-profile candidates.”
Former Liverpool player Harry Kewell, former Brazil U-17 coach Caio Zanardie and former Barcelona reserves manager Jordi Vinyals have all shown interest in the job.
Fowler and Kewell played together for two seasons at Leeds, before Kewell moved to Anfield in 2003 and Fowler returned to the club for a second stint in 2006.
India need to win their final four games to stand any chance of qualifying for the 2027 Asian Cup.
