Rogue AFCON experiment can end FSG contract debate and solve big Jurgen Klopp issue at Liverpool

Jürgen Klopp has cited other issues, but it was plain that Liverpool missed Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah against Arsenal.

The duo are of course away at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), and their side struggled badly to create and convert chances in their absence.

However, AFCON seems to suggest it could be worth ripping up the tactical template — certainly it is more palatable than a slow decline that sees FSG let one of Liverpool’s best players of the Klopp era leave for nothing, aged just 31, at the end of his contract.

That’s despite the fact that Mané has not even been in the best form of late — ironically, the solution might lie in the tournament currently playing out in Cameroon, and it could yet make up the minds of FSG when it comes to a new contract.

If Klopp pulled it off, it would make the contract decision much easier for FSG, extending the longevity of one of the squad’s most talented players.

With Salah and Diogo Jota making runs either side of him, the AFCON version of Mané could be found at Liverpool.

However, seven of those eight goals came before the end of November, with the drought eventually ending against Chelsea in his final game before jetting off to AFCON.
