Liverpool are embroiled in the biggest transfer storyline of the summer as they try to extract Alexander Isak from Newcastle United.

Isak has quickly become the Reds’ number one target to bolster their striking options after scoring 23 Premier League goals last season.

There are a lot of moving parts that will determine whether the Swede eventually joins Liverpool or not, with the importance of Newcastle finding a replacement especially clear.

Benjamin Sesko has reportedly given the green light to Newcastle on Friday night, in what could be a major step forward for Liverpool and Isak.

Another loose end that will need tying up is the question of what Liverpool decide to do with Darwin Nunez.

With Hugo Ekitike already signed, Isak’s arrival would make Nunez redundant within the Liverpool squad.

And despite seeing their first bid for Isak turned down on Friday, the Reds have made a clear decision over Nunez.

Since midway through last season it seems to have been readily accepted that Nunez will leave Liverpool this summer.

Nunez wanted to join Napoli, but after the Italian champions refused to meet Liverpool’s asking price, that did not move forward.

Instead, the latest rumblings have been that Nunez is heading for Saudi Arabia, and reporting on X on Friday evening, journalist Fabrizio Romano said that Liverpool are open to selling the 26-year-old to Al Hilal.

“Discussions between Al Hilal and Darwin Nunez’s camp are still ongoing as Liverpool remain open to permanent sale.” claimed Romano.

“Talks to continue in the next days but Darwin still high on Al Hilal’s list.”

As Romano was confirming that Liverpool will still seek to sell Nunez, Saudi journalist Hamad Al-Suwailihi reported that an offer had landed at Anfield for the No.

9.

“Al Hilal has sent an official offer to the management of the English club Liverpool to purchase the contract of the striker Nunez, who is currently the top choice for the coach Inzaghi,” he said.

There are no details of what kind of fee Al Hilal have put down for Nunez, but how Liverpool respond is going to be fascinating.

If they are not confident of signing Isak, then they really should not be letting the 26-year-old out at this point.

That the Reds are happy to sell Nunez in any case is instructive towards their intentions for the rest of the window, but if they agree a deal to sell him on the back of this new offer, it will really send a signal that there is a gaping spot in the squad open for Isak.
