Roy Hodgson once admitted there was something ‘cut-throat’ about being Liverpool manager he really didn’t like

Liverpool have had some elite managers in the Premier League era, but Roy Hodgson turned out to be one of the worst appointments in their history.

The Reds have enjoyed steady management over recent years, with Jurgen Klopp bringing them huge success, and Arne Slot has done the same during his first season in charge.

However, if Liverpool fans cast their minds back to 2010, something they will want to avoid as much as possible, then they will remember just how bad their management choices really were.

After Rafa Benitez ‘left by mutual consent’ at the end of the season due to failing to qualify for the Champions League, Liverpool’s owners at the time, George Gillett and Tom Hicks, decided that Roy Hodgson was the man to take over.

Many supporters wanted the return of Kenny Dalglish, which they got less than six months later as Hodgson was sacked, with Liverpool as low as 18th after six games.

The former Fulham manager left them in 12th by the time he departed, but once admitted that there was just one thing he hated about being in charge of such a big club.

When managing a club like Liverpool, there will, of course, be huge amounts of pressure on their shoulders, with Hodgson clearly struggling with this.

Despite managing a club the size of Inter Milan before, Liverpool appeared to be one step too far for the former England manager, with the 78-year-old once admitting that the journalists made his job near-impossible.

“I’ve been quite lucky – at Fulham, Watford and here (Crystal Palace) – you’re not dealing with the real cut-throat journalists who want to try and reduce you to tears!” Hodgson said on The Overlap back in 2023.

“I don’t put myself out for that and I’m not sorry to leave that (the experience I had with journalists at Liverpool and England) behind, if I’m brutally honest.

That is a part of the job that I find more demanding and more intellectually tiring than the football.

“The football doesn’t tire me but sometimes preparing for those interviews and being ready for the right questions, and choosing every single word correctly, making sure I didn’t say something that is going to rebound upon me.”

Everyone knows that Hodgson’s time at Anfield was bad, but when broken down into numbers, it is even worse.

As most would expect, Slot has the highest win percentage (66.7%) of any Liverpool manager as he has only taken charge of 39 games, with Klopp the next highest on 62.6%.

As for Hodgson, he is all the way down the bottom with just 35% after winning just seven of his 20 games in charge.

It truly was one of Liverpool’s darker periods in their history, but now, the future is exciting and Slot is only expected to extend his lead at the top of this list even further.
