Former Manchester United star Roy Keane has claimed there was a reason why fans decided to protest before the game against Liverpool.

“Today is a huge game, there’s huge interest from all over the world and there was an opportunity for United fans to make a huge statement and that’s why they did it today because it was Liverpool, the last few weeks have just pushed United fans over the edge.”

The Reds were due to face Man United at Old Trafford in the Premier League, but the game was called off following fan protests.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the news was confirmed, Keane believes that Man United fans chose to protest ahead of the game against Liverpool rather than their Europa League tie against Roma in midweek, “The reason they’ve done it today is because it’s Liverpool at home,” Keane told Sky Sports.

Protests took place outside Old Trafford, as the club’s fans voiced their disapproval towards the club's owners, the Glazer family.

Liverpool, Man United and the Premier League have each released statements following the decision to postpone the match at Old Trafford.

Many fans managed to find their way onto the pitch, with one corner flag being taken and flares being set off.
