Ruben Amorim looks to have finally called time on Rasmus Hojlund’s Man United career after making a key decision in the Red Devils’ pre-season friendly against Fiorentina.
Hojlund was unable to make much of a positive impact in his second season in Manchester, with just four goals scored in 34 league appearances after netting 10 in 30 league games in his debut campaign.
The Danish striker was signed from Atalanta in 2023 for a fee of £72million [BBC], and has seen strong competition for places up-front arrive this summer in the form of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and recent high-profile capture Benjamin Sesko.

Former Red Devils scout Mick Brown told Football Insider earlier in the summer that Hojlund is unlikely to still be at Old Trafford when the window ends, and he also recently revealed to Football Insider that Man United will accept an offer for the Dane in the next few weeks.
Hojlund could soon be added to Amorim’s “bomb squad” of unwanted players, according to reports, and new developments seem to have sealed his fate ahead of the new season.
The Guardian (7 August) recently reported that Sesko’s arrival is set to plunge Hojlund’s future into doubt, with Man United “open to selling or loaning” the 22-year-old soon.
He has remained as part of Amorim’s squad for now, despite rumours of potentially being dropped to join other players who are seeking moves away, but the Portuguese boss’ decision not hand him any game-time against Fiorentina seems to have hammered the last nail in the Dane’s Red Devils coffin.

United took on the Serie A side at Old Trafford in a friendly on Saturday (9 August), with the game ending 1-1 and then 5-4 to the hosts on penalties, but Hojlund was left on the bench with Amorim preferring to start Mason Mount as a false nine with Cunha and Mbeumo either side of him in attack.
Manchester Evening News reporter Steven Railston posted on X following the game saying that the move not to bring Hojlund on “suggests his time at United is finished,” and it is hard to disagree with that sentiment, especially with Sesko still to come into the fold.
Hojlund has reiterated his desire to stay and fight for his place with the north-west giants on numerous occasions this summer, but it certainly looks as if he will have little choice in the manner of his exit, especially with Joshua Zirkzee still to return from injury and ahead of him in the pecking order.
United’s 2024/25 campaign was one to remember for all the wrong reasons, as they finished 16th in the Premier League and were beaten in the Europa League final by fellow strugglers Tottenham.
Portuguese boss Amorim clearly has huge job on his hands to get the club to where they should be, but there is a feeling that they cannot get much worse, and letting Hojlund go makes sense as they aim to improve this season.

Zirkzee is still on their books and Cunha, Mbeumo and Sesko have recently joined, so Hojlund is already likely to get much less game-time next season as it stands.
Hojlund has been linked with a move to Serie A champions Napoli in recent months, while AC Milan are also keen on loaning him in [BBC], and either of those would be great moves for him to get his career back on track in a league and country that he is already familiar with.
He clearly does not have much of a future at United, and despite showing glimpses of the talent that saw the club shell out a sizeable fee for his services two years ago, a move away seems like the most realistic and viable option for him right now.
