Manchester United lost 3-0 to city rivals Manchester City on Sunday, and Ruben Amorim’s job is now reportedly under threat.
Man United have reportedly discussed sacking Amorim during the October international break if results don’t improve.
Candidates have been shortlisted by Man United, with Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner and Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola reportedly in contention.
Man United were beaten by Man City and sank to a 33-year low due in large part to a brace from Erling Haaland, who wowed Gary Neville.
Portuguese giants Benfica sacked former Wolves boss Bruno Lage on Tuesday evening following their 3-2 defeat to Azerbaijani side Qarabag despite being 2-0 up.

European football expert Andy Brassell spoke to Sky Sports News about Amorim potentially heading back to Lisbon with Benfica currently in the midst of a presidential election, saying: “This is all slightly complicated by one of the favourites [for the Benfica president position], Joao Noronha Lopes, being someone who would like to bring in Ruben Amorim, who is a former Benfica player.
“The feeling was that if Amorim and Manchester United parted ways over the next couple of weeks, then maybe he was someone who Benfica could have appointed.”
Before Amorim was able to get a sniff of the Benfica job, Jose Mourinho has been given the reins at the club where he began his managerial career.
Brassell spoke about Mourinho’s appointment, saying: “It’s the context of where Benfica are at the moment.

“They’re a couple of weeks away from a presidential election, and there’s a degree of controversy that club legend Rui Costa and current Benfica president has now made a huge financial commitment to Jose Mourinho when he could well be the outgoing president of the club.”
Amorim will hope that he can turn results around at Old Trafford to avoid being sacked just 12 months after the Portuguese head coach was hired by Man United.
