Ruben Amorim could not hide his disdain after Man United were awarded a late penalty in their win over Burnley.

For nearly all managers at any level, your team being awarded a last-minute penalty to win a match is the stuff of dreams.

But not for the Red Devils boss, who finds himself trapped in a nightmare with no way out.

Sources in Portugal would not deny that Amorim was considering quitting Man United, with the game against Burnley potentially his last in charge of the 20-time champions of England.

Following Man United’s dismal shoot-out loss to League Two side Grimsby, the former Sporting CP boss has been under immense pressure, and that was illustrated when the Red Devils were given a penalty against the Clarets.

With time running short and Amorim’s side looking likely to drop yet more points, Amad drove into Burnley’s box and went to ground after a pull on his shirt from Jadon Anthony.

Referee Samuel Barrott ruminated on the decision for several minutes before ultimately deciding to award the home side a penalty.

Old Trafford erupted, Bruno Fernandes looked laser-focused, keen to make amends after sending his last spot-kick into the stratosphere in their previous match against Fulham, and the United players and staff were delighted.

Everyone with any affiliation to the Red Devils was over the moon, except for one man.

United’s boss massaged his forehead and placed a hand to his face.

His side had just earned the opportunity to claim their first win of an already testing 2025/26 campaign.

Amorim had previously admitted that he “sometimes wants to quit – and sometimes wants to stay at Man Utd for the next 20 years.” [Sky Sports], but his captain may have made that decision for him.

Fernandes smashed his spot-kick past a hapless Martin Dubravka, once again, Old Trafford exploded in joy at the 3-2 win at the death but the Portuguese manager failed to even crack a smile.

That is because three points are a cursed chalice for Amorim; you can’t quit when you’re winning.

A loss or even a draw against Burnley would have been justification enough for the 40-year-old; it would have proven that his methods don’t work, his players don’t respond to his leadership, the project is over.

But no, Amorim knew that in that moment, he had no way out, and until United collapses again soon, he is stuck on a throne ruling over a dynasty that he wants nothing to do with.

Thankfully for the ex-Sporting manager, there is a trip to the Etihad coming up on 14 September, and a chance to finally escape the job he so clearly despises.
