Rangers have been told to stick with manager Russell Martin until at least Christmas after he was subject to supporter protests.

Martin is under huge pressure at Ibrox, with his side sitting a lowly 11th in the Scottish Premiership after five games of the new campaign.

The Gers grabbed their first win in six last weekend, as they beat Hibernian 2-0 in the Scottish League Cup.

Despite the positive result, the match was overshadowed by fans of the Glasgow giants venting their anger against Martin, throwing bouncy balls on the pitch to halt the game momentarily.

However, Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that the former Southampton boss managed to puncture the protests by leading his side to a win.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that Martin deserves until at least Christmas to try and move things forward.

The 39-year-old is Rangers‘ third manager in 2025, following on from Philippe Clement and Barry Ferguson.

Wyness added that he doesn’t understand what the Gers fans are trying to achieve, and that constantly changing managers does not work.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “What a sad, sad case it is.

I looked at some of the videos of the protest, and I saw a load of spotty 16-year-old keyboard warriors in there, as well as some old, grizzled Glaswegians and Rangers fans.

You’ve got to realise now that you’re going to grow for the future, and it’s going to take time.

“Good luck to Russell because I think he deserves to at least get a chance up until Christmas to try and move things forward if nothing else, but it’s got to be the strength of the new owners.

It’s got to be Paraag Marathe and the new board that’s in there.”

On Tuesday (23 September), Football Insider exclusively revealed that Martin’s Rangers future hinges on results before the international break.

The Glasgow giants have four games before the international break in two weeks time, facing Genk and Sturm Graz in the Europa League, as well as Livingston and Falkirk in the Scottish Premiership.

Sources say that these next four games are key for Martin’s future, and he could be dismissed if the negative results continue.

The board remains hopeful that he can turn their dismal early-season form, but are prepared to take action if necessary.
