Liverpool’s 3-2 win over Newcastle United gave a glimpse into how Arne Slot’s midfield setup will look at Anfield this season.
Liverpool came away from St.
James’ Park with all three points despite being second-best in large parts to the 10 men of Newcastle, who played the second half a man down after Anthony Gordon’s red card.
Curtis Jones and Ryan Gravenberch started together at the base of midfield for the first time this season, and the latter struck home Liverpool’s opening goal from long range before Gordon was dismissed.
Newcastle‘s second-half comeback following another goal from Hugo Ekitike looked to have salvaged a point, only for 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha to replace Jones in injury time and score a 100th-minute winner.

Ngumoha and Harvey Elliott were introduced in a double substitution which saw Jones and Cody Gakpo withdrawn, with the Reds’ academy midfielder having started all three of their games so far this season.
Jones’ display in Liverpool’s Community Shield loss to Crystal Palace was impressive in the absence of Gravenberch, who missed their first two matches through the birth of his first child and then suspension.
Gravenberch’s scoring return to Liverpool’s midfield alongside Jones has rubber-stamped his starting place, and he responded to the latter’s Instagram post to celebrate the Reds’ snatch-and-grab victory.

Football Insider Verdict
The build-up to Liverpool’s clash at St.
James’ Park was dominated by Alexander Isak‘s continued efforts to force through a move to Anfield before the end of the summer, after going on strike at Newcastle.
Isak’s absence from Newcastle’s squad left a hole which Gordon had filled until his red card in the first half, but the rate at which Eddie Howe’s side cut through Liverpool implies they need to look elsewhere.
Liverpool have been urged to refocus their pursuit of Isak and instead turn attention to Marc Guehi, who could solve the defensive frailties which have already been exposed behind Jones and Gravenberch this season.
