Liverpool have the chance to lift silverware in back-to-back games against Crystal Palace.

The Eagles visited Anfield on the final day of last season, and despite putting up a valiant effort to end the game in a 1-1 draw, nothing could stop the jubilant celebrations that followed the full-time whistle as Liverpool lifted the Premier League trophy.

Today, Liverpool have the chance to win the Community Shield against Crystal Palace, a feat that if achieved, will allow the Reds to match Arsenal’s record of 17 wins in the fixture, with only Manchester United acquiring more, with 21.

The very first opportunity of the new season for silverware, and Arne Slot’s side will be hoping they can start the season off on the right foot.

One player’s spirits that were slightly dampened on that Anfield afternoon as Liverpool lifted the title was that of Ryan Gravenberch.

The Dutch midfielder was shown a straight red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.

At the time, Liverpool were 1-0 down, and it was a sacrifice he made for the team that was eventually repaid in full as Mohamed Salah equalised late on to share the points.

Due to the Community Shield being Liverpool’s first competitive match of the new season, it is safe to assume that Gravenberch will be suspended for the game.

That is not the case.

Ryan Gravenberch will be available for selection this afternoon at Wembley.

This is due to a loophole in the suspension rules.

The red card was picked up within a Premier League match, meaning the ban will be served in that competition.

However, for more serious offences, the FA does have the right to extend the ban across all domestic competitions but due to the nature of Gravenberch’s foul, that will not be the case in this instance.

As a result, Ryan Gravenberch will not be able to play in Liverpool’s first game of the new Premier League season against Bournemouth but will be available to feature in what could potentially be an emotion-charged game at St.

James Park against Newcastle United.

Arne Slot will be thankful he can call on Gravenberch for the Community Shield, as the midfielder has become a key member of the team under the Dutchman.
