Sam Allardyce makes Jurgen Klopp claim after Trent Alexander-Arnold Liverpool decision - 'It's a shame'

Liverpool legend Jurgen Klopp could reunite with Trent Alexander-Arnold at Real Madrid, according to Sam Allardyce(Image: Andrew Powell/Liverpool FC via Getty Images)

It's the worst-kept secret in football but Trent Alexander-Arnold is signing for Real Madrid.

The England international's contract with Liverpool does not run out until June 30.

Whether Carlo Ancelotti is still manager of Madrid by the time Alexander-Arnold joins up with his new team-mates is another matter.

The former Everton boss looks like he will lose his job with Los Blancos having been knocked out of the Champions League and having lost the Copa del Rey final to Barcelona, who also lead the way in La Liga.

Xabi Alonso, who has worked wonders in charge of Bayer Leverkusen, is being tipped to take over from the Italian.

But another old Everton manager, Sam Allardyce, wonders whether another Liverpool legend, and not Alonso, could be Bernabeu bound.

He said: "Here’s one I could throw out there, do you think he’s (Alexander-Arnold) gone to Real Madrid and Jurgen (Klopp) is coming in?

But I think Klopp would leave any job he’s got now to go to Real Madrid.”

Klopp has also been linked with the Brazil job - along with Ancelotti - since leaving the Reds last summer.

The German is currently working as head of global soccer at Red Bull and his agent, Marc Kosicke, last month confirmed his client is happy in the role.

Kosicke said: "I understand that there have been continued inquiries about Klopp from Europe's top clubs and some federations.

"However, he has no intention of taking over as head coach next season.

Not even at Real Madrid or with the Brazilian national team.

"Jurgen is happy in his role as global director of Red Bull and has a current contract, so there's nothing more to say."

Allardyce, speaking on this week’s episode of Footy Accumulators No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, also addressed the backlash to Alexander-Arnold's decision to end his stay with the club he has supported all his life.

Allardyce said: "I think he’s done the right thing.

He’s served Liverpool exceptionally well and deserves the opportunity.

"There are Liverpool fans who don’t like it, and Jamie Carragher’s gone on about it, but he’d have gone.

"Jamie Carragher wouldn’t have stayed at Liverpool if Real Madrid wanted him, he’d be off like a shot!”

Carragher, who remained with the Reds throughout his whole career, making 737 appearances, which is the second highest in the club's history, said: "He (Alexander-Arnold) will lose something that he's got right now in terms of Liverpool supporters' love for him, him being 'one of their own' will diminish.

"Some people will say 'playing for Real Madrid, that price is not worth paying'.

I don't think any Liverpool fan can deny that Real Madrid are the biggest club in the world.

"But that (love from the fans) is something he has sacrificed playing for Real Madrid."

Alexander-Arnold and Liverpool return to action this weekend when they welcome Arsenal, the team they have just comprehensively beaten to be crowned Premier League champions, to Anfield on Sunday (4.30pm kick-off).
