Sander Westerveld has put forth a theory on why he thinks Arne Slot has not been officially announced by either Feyenoord

Westerveld has the unique perspective of having played at Liverpool as well playing with Arne Slot during both of their playing days.

Westerveld was signed from Vitesse in 1999 under manager Gerard Houllier, where he would go on to achieve a treble of the League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup with Liverpool in 2001.

He also played alongside Arne Slot at Sparta Rotterdam.

During the 2007/08 season, the duo shared the pitch in 21 matches and have maintained a close friendship since, regularly enjoying rounds of golf together.

Following Jurgen Klopp’s announcement of departure, Arne Slot wasn’t initially the primary contender for the Liverpool managerial position.

Instead, attention was largely focused on candidates like Xabi Alonso and then later Ruben Amorim.

However, all signs lead to Liverpool settling on Arne Slot to shape the post-Klopp era.

Reports suggest that Liverpool’s leadership has agreed to pay Feyenoord a compensation package of €9 million, with an additional €2 million in add-ons, to secure Slot’s services.

Despite having two years left on his contract with Feyenoord, Slot publicly expressed his ambition to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.

Initially, Feyenoord rejected Liverpool’s initial offer of approximately £7.7 million.

However, after further negotiations, Liverpool revisited the discussions and successfully reached an agreement with Feyenoord.

While Slot’s appointment is yet to be officially announced by either club, many are wondering what the delay is.

The former Liverpool man believes that the lack of an assistant manager could be a factor in delaying the official confirmation.

It was reported that Arne Slot tried to convince his former assistant manage Sipke Hulshoff to accompany him to Liverpool.

However, it is believed Hulshoff declined, with Slot still needing an assistant manager at Anfield.

Westerveld began to BBC Sport (via FourFourTwo):

“For some reason they still haven’t announced it.

They are still struggling with the assistant coach.”

“Sipke is the assistant to [Netherlands coach] Ronald Koeman, so he has to go to the Euros, so I think that is a little debate – but this is the week to announce it.”

“[Slot] had a big farewell yesterday in the stadium so he’s already said goodbye to the fans, so I think it is all sorted.”

He then explained that the style of football Slot brings will likely be appreciated on Merseyside next season:

“I am really excited.

I know him, of course, better than any [other] coach – it is a perfect fit.”

“I saw all the other names in the frame, like Xabi Alonso, and I never put Slot in there but once he was there I was like ‘this makes perfect [sense]’, so I am really looking forward to it.”

“If you look at the way he is with the press, the way he is with the fans, with the people, with the players, his playing style – attractive football, dominating, high pressure.”

“He said before that he likes the Guardiola and Klopp styles of football?

That’s who he got inspired by and that’s how he plays football with Feyenoord as well.”
