Manchester City’s goalkeeping rebuild is finally complete after Ederson ended his eight-season spell at the Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola has two new goalkeepers to choose from this season after Man City completed the last-ditch signing of Gianluigi Donnarumma on Tuesday, well after Monday’s transfer deadline had passed.

Donnarumma’s arrival at the Etihad sees him join returning academy star James Trafford to bolster the Blues’ goalkeeping options even further, with the Italian set to wear the number 25 shirt at Man City.

Football Insider revealed on 2 September that Donnarumma will immediately supercede Trafford as Man City’s number one following the international break, despite the 22-year-old starting their first three matches with Ederson out of the picture.

Ederson’s future had been shrouded in uncertainty since well before the end of last season, with Man City backed to accept offers for him as far back as February amid interest from the Saudi Pro League.

The Brazilian was left out of Guardiola’s squads in all three of Man City’s competitive matches so far this season, and has finally confirmed his departure after completing a £12.1milllion move to Fenerbahce.

Ederson leaves Man City with 372 appearances and 18 trophies under his belt as well as the most assists of any Premier League goalkeeper in history, and he posted an emotional farewell message on Instagram.

Football Insider Verdict

After falling well off the pace in the Premier League title race last season and seeing the likes of Kevin De Bruyne depart earlier this summer, Man City’s overhaul was always likely to see more big names depart.

The amount of churn between the sticks has been criticised, however, and City’s former financial advisor Stefan Borson told Football Insider that Ederson’s exit has “destabilised the whole team” for £2.6million.

Donnarumma’s arrival leaves Trafford facing an uncertain long-term future at the Etihad after his return to the club for £31m this summer, and it remains to be seen if he can retain his place ahead of arguably the world’s best goalkeeper.
