Scotland’s campaign began with a 0-0 draw in Copenhagen against Denmark, where Robertson played the full 90 minutes,
Four days later, he again completed every minute of the visitors’ 0-2 victory over Belarus.
This burst of competitive action comes after Robertson discovered himself on the bench for Liverpool’s first three Premier League matches, having been supplanted in the starting XI by summer signing Milos Kerkez.
Having started pretty much every game during his eight years on Merseyside, Robertson admitted the change has been challenging but not unwelcomed.
“It’s not been awkward, I don’t think awkward is the right word.
I’ve had eight years at Liverpool where, apart from the very start, I was always a starter, I was always playing.”
“And now the first three games, I’ve obviously found myself on the bench, which is what it is,” he explained while on Scotland duty.
And luckily for the Reds, it seems that the lack of football has not impact the vice-captain’s performances.
The Scotsman gave Robertson a 7/10 for his showing against Belarus last night, and wrote:
“The captain once again patrolled the left flank and looked to support Gannon-Doak whenever the Scots went on the offensive.”
“Had one slack back-pass that Gunn would not thank him for, and the hosts tried to go over the top of him on a few occasions?
Like the rest of the defence, showed up fine.”
The Herald likewise graded him a 7/10 and commented:
“Combined with Gannon Doak well on the left flank, and provided quality deliveries into the box from deep
A necessary mature performance from the Scotland captain.”
Liverpool’s campaign is likely going to be long this season with the squad aiming to go deep in four competitions.
Although Robertson has not got the game time at Anfield he probably wants, once the cup competitions get underway after the international break that will change.
