Scott Parker believes it was “harsh” on his Burnley side after Liverpool gained a dramatic win at Turf Moor.

Mohamed Salah struck a penalty five minutes into injury time to earn the Reds a 1-0 Premier League victory on Sunday afternoon.

Liverpool, who are now three points clear at the top of the embryonic table, had dominated possession but found it difficult to break down the resolute Burnley rearguard.

And having seen the Clarets lose 3-2 at Manchester United in similar fashion last time out, Parker said: “It’s heartbreaking the way the game finishes for us.

Two games in row now in the dying minutes penalties decide the game and we don’t manage to get the result.

“It’s pretty disappointing.

It’s harsh, but that’s this league.

“But I’m pleased and proud.

They are deadly when they have that.”

Parker added: “We had a plan not to do that and for the majority of the game we did that.

The players really produced a performance that was everything we’ve worked on this week, organised, diligent.

“I’m just gutted for them.

“I’m 44 years of age and had some disappointment and ups and downs and it’s these nuggets that for the group would have been a powerful moment (to hold on for a draw) – but there was a lot to be proud of.”

Burnley were reduced to 10 men for the closing moments when Lesley Ugochukwu was dismissed for a second booking following a foul on Florian Wirtz, while the decisive spot kick was awarded after Hannibal Mejbri handled a cross from Liverpool substitute Jeremie Frimpong.

And Parker added: “It’s probably a penalty, the learning from it for us is that we probably need to train defenders to put their arms behind their back.

“And no complaints with the sending off, it looked like a second yellow.”
