Sheffield United supporters are already furious with Ruben Selles following their opening-game defeat to Bristol City.

While Scott Twine fired home the first goal at Bramall Lane on Saturday, 9 August, the Blades could quickly relax as Tyrese Campbell equalised just nine minutes later.

However, Gerhard Struber’s side quickly turned on the burners against their Championship semi-final play-off opponents from last season, as Ross McCrorie’s striker retook the lead for the Robins.

Anis Mehmeti netted to throw further misery on the home supporters, only for Twine to score his second of the day and City’s fourth in a total collapse from Selles’ players.

Supporters have been very vocal about the lack of activity in the transfer market this summer, with Ehije Ukaki, Tyler Bindon, Louie Barry, Mihail Polendakov, and Djibril Soumare the only arrivals.

The squad is incredibly light in defence, as proven by the Robins’ visit to Bramall Lane, with veteran Jack Robinson having to replace Rhys Norrington-Davies after 57 minutes.

To make matters worse, Football Insider revealed in July that PSV Eindhoven were interested in Gus Hamer, and with the transfer window still open, there is time remaining for stars to abandon ship.

Chris Wilder was moments from taking the Blades back to the Premier League last season, but after failing to do so, and likely a difference of opinion with the owners, the decision was made to part ways.

Sheffield United replaced Chris Wilder this summer.

With their previous manager, the Blades missed out on automatic promotion by 10 points, but only one spot below second-place Burnley, with a last-gasp goal from Tom Watson condemning them to defeat in the play-off final last season.

Selles’ arrival was greeted with a lot of raised eyebrows, and fans will now feel that their uncertainty over the decision has quickly been proven during the 4-1 defeat to Bristol City.

Reacting to the dreadful defeat, one fan wrote, “Ruben Selles won’t make it till Christmas!” while another predicted him to be the first Championship manager to be sacked this season.

It is just one game into the 2025/26 campaign, and the transfer window is not yet closed, so there is plenty of time to turn his fortunes around, but there are questions over whether he will be allowed to do so.

The 42-year-old struggled immensely during his time as Hull City boss, which is why the decision caught many off-guard, and now his time at Bramall Lane could come to the same sorry conclusion.
