Sheffield Wednesday expert highlights 'two solutions' for Dejphon Chansiri as administration looms

Sheffield Wednesday are increasingly close to facing administration amid the continued financial failings overseen by owner Dejphon Chansiri.

Henrik Pedersen’s men are likely to go into administration if Chansiri fails to repay a £7.4million loan by September 30th.

Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday captain Barry Bannan has grown fed up with the situation, telling talkSPORT on Thursday, 25 September, that he isn’t getting anywhere with asking questions of the ownership.

Football finance expert Dan Plumley exclusively told Football Insider that Chansiri’s decision to cling on to Sheffield Wednesday despite their monetary problems is ‘really baffling.’

Similarly, speaking live on BBC Radio Sheffield’s Football Heaven show on 25 September, Rob Staton said: “If you can’t pay the bills, and if everybody wants you out, and all your existence is currently us a bunch of Wednesday fans demanding for you to go constantly, endless negative headlines, national newspapers, national media doing pieces on the TV and the radio all saying what a terrible job you’re doing, why would you want to carry on?

Might as well wait until next year because you’ll get the same price next year.

“Where’s the enjoyment between now and next June to warrant clinging on?

That’s not a future for anybody.”

Thanks to Chansiri’s worsening mismanagement, Sheffield Wednesday have been handed transfer embargoes by the EFL already.

Despite their financial woes, the Owls are not bottom of the Championship table heading into their clash with Queens Park Rangers on Saturday, 27 September, thanks to the fact that cross-city rivals Sheffield United have endured six consecutive defeats in the second tier, although relegation already seems likely for Pedersen’s side.

However, if the South Yorkshire club enter administration, an unwanted return to League One will be all but certain for Wednesday, as the EFL’s punishment for administration is a 12-point deduction.

That fate was suffered by Wigan Athletic in the 2019/20 Championship season, and could be unfortunately emulated in S6.

Meanwhile, the UK government’s new football regulator has the power to remove problematic owners, which has yet to occur in Chansiri’s case.

Consequently, the Owls are destined for a long and challenging Championship campaign.
