Sheffield Wednesday have agreed a deal to sign Cardiff City goalkeeper Ethan Horvath amid the injury suffered by Pierce Charles.

Amid the Owls’ financial struggles under owner Dejphon Chansiri, Charles had attracted interest from Rangers and West Ham.

But with the Northern Ireland shotstopper set for a spell on the sidelines, it is Wednesday who have entered the transfer market for a new man between the sticks.

Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday youngster Romario Collins is set to join Manchester City, as the South Yorkshire club face further exits, having witnessed the departures of players like Anthony Musaba and Michael Smith.

Horvath maintained three clean sheets in 17 Championship appearances for Cardiff last term, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Bluebirds suffering relegation to League One.

Meanwhile, the Sheffield Star’s Joe Crann revealed via X on Thursday, 21 August: “Hearing that Ethan Horvath to SWFC is a done deal.

Talk of a longer-term deal through to January.

“Will report more if I get it.”

Crann reported via the Sheffield Star on 21 August that Henrik Pedersen’s men are able to agree seven-day loan deals amid the transfer restrictions imposed on them due to Chansiri’s failings.

With Horvath set to move to Hillsborough, Sheffield Wednesday have also eyed a move for Liam Cooper.

Since replacing former boss Danny Rohl, Pedersen has endured a tough ride at the Hillsborough managerial helm, enduring two defeats in as many attempts in the Championship.

Courtesy of numerous player departures, Pedersen has been forced to work with a thin squad that lacks many of last season’s key figures, such as James Beadle and Josh Windass.

The injury suffered by Charles, who is a talented young goalkeeper, arrived as yet another untimely blow for the new Sheffield Wednesday boss.

However, the news that Horvath could be serving between the sticks for the Owls until January is a rare positive for Pedersen in otherwise troubled times.

Horvath has earned bags of Championship experience courtesy of his time with his current club, Cardiff, and previous stints with Nottingham Forest and Luton Town.

The 30-year-old has even played in the Champions League for Club Brugge, while his 10 caps for the USA team further endorse his ability.
