Sheffield Wednesday have decided against selling Pierce Charles to West Ham and Rangers after both sides approached the club with respective offers for the young goalkeeper.

Sheffield Wednesday’s crazy summer has seen a number of players leave for pastures new, while existing members of staff have gone three months without being paid due to controversial owner Dejphon Chansiri’s shortfalls.

The Hillsborough outfit’s squad has taken a battering, with Djeidi Gassama leaving to join Rangers, while Josh Windass departed and moved to Wrexham and Anthony Musaba left for Turkish side Samsunspor.

Chansiri wants over £100million from a prospective buyer to sell the club, which is unlikely, and their Championship campaign was previously in doubt but they have been able to begin the new season as they lost 2-1 to Leicester City last weekend.

The Owls have now been taken off the EFL‘s transfer embargo list, and so can sign players, but may still be set to lose some key men with highly-rated shot-stopper Charles of interest to a number of top sides.

20-year-old Charles has started this season as Henrik Pedersen’s number one between the sticks after James Beadle returned to Brighton in the summer following the end of his loan spell.

The Belfast Telegraph have previously reported that the Northern Ireland international is of interest to Rangers, recently relegated Leicester City and Southampton, and the Owls have now received seemingly concrete approaches for his services.

The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath has claimed, via X, that Wednesday goalkeeper Charles has been the subject of “£1m+” bids from both West Ham and Scottish giants Rangers, with most of that fee due to be paid up front.

Both deals to potentially take the 20-year-old to either club are now off, however, as neither the Hammers nor the Gers have received a response from Wednesday, and so look set to focus on targets elsewhere.

McGrath states that any fee for Charles “could go long way to paying wages to staff,” and while that is true, the Belfast Telegraph have previously claimed that Wednesday are set to demand £8m for his signature, and so any bid way short of that is clearly unlikely to be entertained.

Football Insider verdict

While it is often tough to measure a young player’s ceiling in the game when they are only just breaking into senior football, what can be obvious is their current level of ability, and Charles is clearly ready to be a number one in the second-tier right now.

Charles massively impressed last weekend against Leicester, and his standout performance at the King Power Stadium was likely a catalyst for those interested clubs to push to make a concrete approach for his services ahead of the upcoming transfer deadline.

With eight international appearances at just 20-years-old, it is clear that he is already a top keeper in his own right, and someone who could go on to become a Premier League regular in the years to come, with the pedigree to do coming from his time spent in the Man City academy as a youth player.

However, even though Wednesday are strapped for cash and need more players coming in to stand any chance of survival this season, they should not bow to lowball offers from the likes of West Ham and Rangers and only sell him for an up-front fee of around £5m with add-ons and a sell-on clause included.
