Sheffield Wednesday are just 10 days away from their season opener against Leicester City and are yet to sign a single player this summer.

The Owls have been under a transfer embargo for the entirety of the summer, due to wages going unpaid.

As a consequence, the club can only make loan or free agent signings, but none have been forthcoming so far.

Despite achieving a miraculous 12th-place finish last season, Danny Rohl has departed Sheffield Wednesday, whilst top scorer Josh Windass has joined Wrexham after successfully appealing a decision to cancel his contract.

Those two key figures have been joined by 13 other players leaving the club, with new Rangers signing Djeidi Gassama and Man City’s new youngster Caelan Cadamarteri the only two players to depart for a fee.

This article contains exclusive comment from Dan Plumley, a football finance expert and senior lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University.

Players departing are a normal part of football, but being unable to sign replacements is not.

Sheffield Wednesday‘s precarious financial position, with no guarantees of wages being paid, makes a move to Hillsborough an unappealing one, even if it is just a temporary stay.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Plumley explained: “The embargo is on signing players for fees.

“But again, the takeover is crucial to that because who’s going to want to come in and sign for that club as it is currently, with the fact that you might not be getting paid ultimately.

“I just go back to that point of the longer this takeover situation rumbles on, the more likely it is that more players might leave and the less likely it is that you bring decent players in on frees and loans because both go hand in hand.

“There has to be a takeover of that club soon to rectify some of this.

Has to be.”

The North Stand of Hillsborough has been closed by the city council due to concerns over its structural integrity.

Corrosion was found in the roof of the stand, and the club were told to carry out repairs, which have not happened.

This news is the latest bitter blow for the ailing club, especially as fans will presumably be issued refunds on their Sheffield Wednesday season tickets, unless the Owls can figure out a fix to the issue.

However, this seems unlikely, given that the club is unable to afford to pay its players and staff, making an entire refurbishment of the iconic North Stand an expensive problem.
