Newcastle’s search for a high-profile striker may finally be over as they close in on a new signing which could allow Alexander Isak to finally leave the club amid his transfer saga.

The Swedish striker has played no part in the Magpies’ first two Premier League games as he continues to revolt while standing firm in his desire to join Liverpool this summer.

Liverpool submitted an opening offer for Isak totalling £120million last month, which was duly rejected by the Magpies, and they are yet to return with an improved bid with less than a week until the deadline on Monday (1 September).

Isak released a shock statement about his Newcastle situation on 19 August, insisting that promises had been “broken” by the club and they had “lost” his trust regarding an agreement that he believes had been made to allow him to depart this summer.

Football Insider revealed on Thursday (28 August) that Liverpool are increasingly confident of signing Isak before the window closes after holding new talks with his camp, and the move could accelerate in the coming days as Newcastle close in on a new striker replacement.

The Daily Mail (28 August) have reported that they have been told by their sources in Germany that Newcastle are closing in on a deal for Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade.

Germany international Woltemade has previously been linked to Newcastle and Man United after he netted 12 goals in 28 Bundesliga appearances last season, and now he looks set to make the move to Tyneside.

The Mail have also revealed that there “remains an acceptance” that selling Isak could be best for all parties if they bring in two new strikers, despite previously insisting that he is not for sale.

That means that a move for Woltemade could mean the Swede is finally on the move, with Newcastle also pushing to sign Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen to bolster Eddie Howe’s ranks.

Football Insider verdict

Woltemade and Strand Larsen are each not at Isak’s level from an individual standpoint, but the pair of them would provide a potent attacking force that could replicate his goalscoring exploits together in rotation with each other.

The discourse around Isak’s exit has long been focused on the fact that Newcastle need replacements through the door to let him leave, and now that they are closing in on Woltemade and Strand Larsen has told Wolves he wants the move [The Athletic], the dominoes could start to fall.

In fact, bringing in both of those players could well soften Newcastle’s stance on letting Isak go for a mammoth £150m fee, as they would be much happier to let him leave with replacements already through the door.

The saga is certainly one that looks set to go right to the wire, but the upshot is Newcastle will be able to move on and look forward if he is allowed out, and so a price tag closer to that of the previously-rejected £120m may be agreed just for it to happen.
