Jamie Carragher ripped into Ibrahima Konate after a night to forget for the Frenchman despite a 4-2 victory for Liverpool.

The Reds avoided a late-scare after scoring two late goals courtesy of Mohamed Salah and substitute Federico Chiesa.

A double whammy of counter-attack goals from Antoine Semenyo put the Cherries right back into the game having conceding twice to Hugo Ekitike and Cody Gakpo.

However, a huge concern for Arne Slot would have been the shoddy performance of Konate who did not look at the races for Liverpool as pundit Carragher laid into him during the match.

Throughout the game, but especially in the second half, the Frenchman was not near his usual dependable self.

As Bournemouth began to mount the pressure, a Marcos Senesi cross sailed into the box as Evanilson headed over the bar with Konate nowhere to be seen.

Former Red Carragher picked up on the ex-RB Leipzig man’s leggy showing, saying (9.31pm live on Sky Sports Main Event 15 August): “I feel like the goal is coming, I mean [Ibrahima Konate’s positional play is all over the place.

“He has no idea where the Bournemouth attacking player is there.

The one initially, before that he wasn’t in the right position [either].

“He got a whack with the ball earlier, I don’t know if that’s affecting him but positional-wise he’s all over the place.”

Following a subsequent Bournemouth counter-attack, Carragher further highlighted Konate’s play.

“What is he doing?

That is shocking.”

This wasn’t the first time the France international had been caught out where moments before the centre-back left David Brooks and Marcus Tavernier in acres of space to link up in the 18-yard box before his ever-reliable partner Virgil van Dijk stepped in.

Later on, the Welshman threatened the number five down the left as he seemingly jogged, failing to keep up with the number seven as he whipped a killer ball into the box for Semenyo to convert.

Subsequently, Semenyo equalised with Konate again looking lost as he continued to back-peddle away from the dynamic winger, allowing him to run from the halfway line to then smash the ball home.

Only flailing a leg out to stop the rocket, Carragher, completely baffled by the defender’s performance, then added in the 77th minute: “What’s he doing?

He’s been absolutely shocking this evening, Konate.”

Football Insider verdict

The terrible performance from the Frenchman shows the Reds must move in to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace to sure up the centre-back spot.

Indeed, the signing of Giovanni Leoni from Parma is a good start, but the teenager will be nowhere near the Premier League standard the Dutch boss will need.

The England international’s top-flight experience combined with his composure and defensive intelligence is precisely what the red half of Merseyside need right now.

At times, the defence was at sixes-and-sevens, highlighting the vital need for a more suitable partner for van Dijk.

Palace, whilst reluctant to let go of the Englishman, desperately need to raise some funds from a Guehi sale before it is too late as the 25-year-old’s contract is set to expire next summer.

This puts the Reds in a golden position to snatch the former Chelsea academy graduate up for a reduced price to bolster their backline in pursuit of back-to-back Premier League titles.
