Liverpool have booked their place in the Community Shield for next season by winning their league title, now they must wait to find out who their opponents will be, or if the game will be played at all.

Historically, the winners of the FA Cup would be the side to play in the Community Shield, and if a team happened to win a double, then the team who came second in the league would play the champions.

However, with European competition set to be concluded throughout August, the FA face the possibility of a fixture clash

The FA still hope the fixture can be squeezed into a packed schedule, but much depends on when the new Premier League campaign will begin. A date has been pencilled in for August 23rd for the Shield to be held at Wembley, but that date would clash with the Champions League final in Lisbon.

Both Manchester clubs are still involved in Europe and will face each other in FA Cup semi-finals, allowing for potential clashes. Should one of these sides win the FA Cup and reach their respective European final, as it stands they would be unable to compete in the Community Shield.

A report in The Times has suggested that the FA could invite the winners of the Championship to take part in the Community Shield ahead of the 2020/21 campaign, should the FA Cup winner be unable to take part.

West Bromwich Albion are currently leading the way at the top of the Championship, Leeds United sit second just two points adrift with a game in hand.

Last season, Liverpool were runners-up to Manchester City, losing the game 5-4 on penalties after Gini Wijnaldum saw his shootout effort saved. The Reds’ participated in the match after finishing second in the league behind City, who were also winners of the FA Cup.
