Liverpool’s defence is set to transform over the next two years as they begin to move on from Virgil van Dijk.

For a long time it had looked as though the Reds would need to be sourcing a replacement for Van Dijk during the summer transfer window just gone.

However, after the Liverpool captain signed a new two-year contract extension in April, they do not need to worry until 2027 at the earliest.

That is also the year when Joe Gomez’s Liverpool contract eventually runs out, while Ibrahima Konate is currently set to leave 12 months earlier, in 2026.

Giovanni Leoni has been added to the Liverpool squad, and the Reds may return to sign Marc Guehi at some point next year, too.

But with so much heading out the door, Arne Slot is likely to need at least one more incoming central defender.

And according to journalist Paul Gorst, Liverpool may have already found him one.

If Liverpool do bring Guehi in next year but Konate leaves, they are right back where they started.

Quansah’s playing time had decreased under Slot, but he was still a good option.

Luckily, Liverpool included a buy-back clause in the 22-year-old’s sale, and according to Gorst, Quansah has even agreed terms on a contract in case he returns to Anfield in 2027.

“The interesting one with Quansah is that he’s already agreed his contract if he is to return,” the reporter told The Redmen TV.

His future Liverpool contract if he comes back has already been agreed.”

“I imagine it would be improved,” Gorst adds.

“It’s essentially not going to be something where Liverpool look to trigger the buyback clause and can’t agree personal terms with Quansah, because it’s already done.

The England man is currently facing some turmoil with manager Erik ten Hag sacked after just two matches in charge.

Nevertheless, Quansah has started well in Germany, and if he carries on in the same way, it is easy to see Liverpool triggering this agreement.

Suppose heading into the 2027/28 season their options are Leoni, Guehi and Quansah, that will be a decent position for Liverpool to be in.

One more will likely be needed, with the Reds usually picking from four orthodox options at any given time.

If Van Dijk is still the same player he is today, then he could also sign another extension, leaving Liverpool with a good blend of youth and experience.
