Liverpool are struggling at the moment and are in real danger of missing out on a top-four finish in the Premier League table this season. Paul Merson on Liverpool duo Joe Gomez and Joel Matip Merson wrote: “Without Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip are simply not good enough and given Liverpool are constantly being overrun in midfield – I would like to see them mix things up.”

We can understand why Liverpool are struggling without Virgil van Dijk.



However, neither Gomez nor Matip is at the level of Van Dijk. So, we can understand why the Liverpool defence is not as good or strong when Van Dijk is not there.
