As Liverpool bask in the glory of becoming Premier League champions for the second time, the echoes of a prophetic warning from Sir Alex Ferguson resonate louder than ever.

Years ago, the legendary Manchester United boss tipped Liverpool to re-establish themselves as a dominant force in England under Jurgen Klopp, whom he described as the "perfect" manager for the Reds.

It was a prediction that not only came true, but also left Gary Neville trembling in his boots - a fear that's effectively been cemented with another title triumph under Arne Slot's stewardship.



According to Jamie Carragher, Ferguson was one of the few beyond the red half of Merseyside who truly believed Klopp would turn Liverpool into champions when he arrived in 2015.

A few months early, the Reds had finished 26 points behind champions Chelsea.

However, it didn't take Klopp too long to close the gap between them and the country's - and Europe's - elite.

The German led the club to Champions League glory in 2019, and followed it up by ending Liverpool's 30-year wait for a league title in 2020.

He felt, and exhibited, no inferiority complex, and Ferguson intuitively knew he was perfect for Liverpool."

Klopp failed to win another league title, but kept Liverpool firmly in the hunt for major honours throughout the final years of his iconic tenure.

However, many believe that Slot has his predecessor to thank for the way he's managed to hit the ground running - with Klopp guiding the Reds to an 82-point season last year despite an injury crisis and several glaring gaps in the squad.

By leading Liverpool to glory this season, Slot has become the 12th manager to win the Premier League, and just the fifth man to do it in his debut season in English football.

He may have matched Klopp's league title tally already, but there's no question that much of the success Liverpool have enjoyed this season is down to the work Klopp did during his nine-year spell at Anfield, and the "scary" foundations he laid at the club.
