Sir Dave Brailsford celebrated emphatically after Manchester United's dramatic last-gasp victory over Liverpool on Sunday.

The Red Devils and their arch-rivals played out an enthralling FA Cup tie at Old Trafford, but extra-time was required to determine who would advance to the semi-finals of the competition. The match was 2-2 at the end of normal time after a late goal from Antony.

Harvey Elliott restored Liverpool's lead in the 105th minute to leave Erik ten Hag's side on the brink of elimination. However, two quickfire goals from Marcus Rashford and Amad Diallo, the latter in the final minute of extra-time, secured a famous victory for United.

Victory keeps United's hopes of ending the season with a trophy alive. And the significance of the result was not lost on Brailsford, one of Sir Jim Ratcliffe's right-hand men.

The Ineos director of sport has been a prominent figure at Manchester United since Ratcliffe acquired a 27.7 per cent stake in the club and was once again in attendance for Sunday's big match.

It was outlined by the host of MUTV during the club's post-match stream that Brailsford, who is renowned for keeping his emotions in check, was punching the air in jubilation after watching United down Liverpool.

With Brailsford primed for a significant role at the club as part of the Ratcliffe regime, there's every chance that the former cycling guru will have a big say in the future of Ten Hag, who remains under pressure.

The Dutchman enjoyed a fine maiden season at the helm but has failed to meet expectations this year. Speculation that he could be sacked by Ineos at the end of the campaign have failed to subside in recent weeks, particularly given Ratcliffe has failed to publicly endorse the former Ajax chief.

Speaking before Sunday's big win, Ten Hag remained defiant in the wake of such rumours, insisting that the club are still on the right path. He said: “Sometimes you have setbacks and we have had a lot this season. It’s about sticking together, you have to face it together, make sure you are on one page together.

“Noise is always around Manchester United, don’t get distracted by it, know together where we are going. And how can we improve to always give your best every day and then finally you will achieve your aims.”
