Liverpool are currently undergoing an expensive summer overhaul.

The club have splashed the cash already this summer, striking deals for Bayer Leverkusen duo Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz, as well as Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez.

Transfer business from the new Premier League clubs is not done there, with more arrivals expected.

Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt is next up, with the clubs finalising a deal for the French striker that will take Liverpool’s spending this summer to over £300m.

Investment was always expected, as the club look to stay on their perch at the top of England’s top-flight.

However, it may open up problems for squad registration.

If Hugo Ekitike is signed, Liverpool’s squad will consist of 31 senior squad players over the age of 21, with 19 of them being classed as overseas players.

Clubs are restricted to name a maximum 25-man squad, featuring no more than 17 overseas players.

As a result, as things stand, Liverpool would be unable to register six players for the new season.

A problem that could deepen if further additions follow Ekitike to Liverpool.

There are a number of players who cn afely be counted out of Arne Slot’s plans such as Calvin Ramsay, Rhys Williams and James Balagizi.

It would also be no surprise if fringe players Fabian Mrozek, Tyler Morton, Owen Beck and Luca Stephenson left on loan or permanently.

Excluding the names mentioned, Liverpool would be left with a 24-man squad with 18 overseas players, meaning the actual squad will have to be capped at 23.

Luckily, there appear to be senior depatures too this summer.

Darwin Nunez is on the verge of a move away, whilst Luis Diaz continues to express his desire to leave the club.

Kostas Tsimikas may look to move on following the arrival of Milos Kerkez, with Federico Chiesa’s future at Liverpool also up in the air.

Ibrahima Konate’s contract is up next year, and Liverpool could look to cash in on him this summer to avoid the possibility of him leaving on a free.

Harvey Elliott has also hinted at the idea of wanting to move away in search of regular first-team football.

Liverpool will need to oversee six departures this summer to balance their books, a number that could rise given Liverpool’s ongoing transfer activity.

It will be a summer of significant change at Liverpool, with the squad potentially looking very different to the one that concluded last season.
